Photopea – A web Based Photo Editing Tool

What is Photopea ?

Photopea is an online image editor that lets you work with various file formats, such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Google sketch, PDF, JPG, Tiff, Png  and many more. You can enjoy the features of Photoshop without any cost, license or storage space with Photopea. You can edit your files online and use all the photo tools for free. Photopea supports both raster and vector graphics, and has a user interface similar to Photoshop. You can also open and edit files that require specific software, such as Illustrator, Corel Draw or other graphic design programs. Photopea is perfect for occasional users who don’t want to pay for expensive software that they rarely use. That’s why I love Photopea for my personal projects. Apart from that you can use their templates or create your own for social media like facebook, instagram, linked In, youtube etc. Photopea supports ICC colour profiles and can handle various color spaces. It works with 8-bit color depth.

How to use Photopea ?

Photopea is a web based Photo Editing tool that works like Photoshop. To start with Photopea, open any one of the web browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera Mini, or Microsoft Edge. Go to the search engine and type www.photopea.com. Photopea can run on any device such as desktop, tablet, phone, or any other type of computer, but for the best comfort, you should use a big screen like a desktop. It will not be comfortable to edit on a mobile device like a computer, as you need a mouse that plays a great role in design. It runs like Photoshop and Sketch. After opening an image you will get more options on the top and right side. Each PSD document contains multiple layers, each representing a distinct part of the image, often filled with transparent, partially transparent, or opaque pixels.

When you enter the Photopea dashboard, you will find an interface similar to the one shown in the image above. In the middle of the interface, you will see three options:

  • New project: Here, you can start a new project.
  • Open from Computer: Here, you can open a file from your computer and edit it as per your choice.
  • Templates: From here, you can choose readymade PSD templates to work with.
  • Drop Any file here – Here, you can drag any file and edit.

How to open file in Photopea ?

On the left-hand side of the interface, you will find several options like Computer Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, and Google Drive to open the file you want to edit. On the top of the interface, you will find options like File, Edit, Image, Layer, Select, Filter, View, Windows and more.

How to save file in Photopea ?

You can save your work as a PSD file by selecting File > Save as PSD. You can also save your file for distribution on the web (in formats like PNG, JPG, SVG, PDF, and more) by selecting File > Export As > PNG, JPG, etc or there is a download icon from where you can download your file.

How to Scale the Image in Photopea ?

To scale the image, access the New Project option or navigate to File > New Project. Set your Project Name, Width & height size, and format (pixel, centimeter, millimeter, Inches), DPI, Background Image color, and create. You have the flexibility to select predefined sizes like FB Page Cover, FB Shared Image, Instagram Reel, post size, Youtube, Twitter, and PSD Templates from the right side.

Layer Panel

Layers panel is where you can see and manage the layer structure of the document. You can find it on the right sidebar. It shows the list of all layers and their small images. Layers at the bottom of the list are the layers behind other layers, while layers at the top are the layers in front of other layers.

When we have many layers, we need to pick one that we want to work with. A layer can be picked by clicking on it (on its name or on its small image) in the Layers panel.

How to rasterize in photopea ?

When you edit an image, you work with different layers that contain pixels. But not all layers are the same. Some layers have pixels that come directly from the image, while others have pixels that come from other sources.

To convert an undirect layer into a regular raster layer, we have to rasterize it (right-click – Rasterize, or Layer – Rasterize). Smart objects will lose the link to the source image, text layers will lose the text information, only pixel data will remain.

For example, some layers are Smart Objects that use pixels from another image and how you transform it. Some layers are Fill layers that use pixels from the color or pattern you choose. And some layers are Text layers that use pixels from the text and its style. These layers are called “undirect raster layers”, and they have some limitations. You can’t draw on them or blur them like you can with direct raster layers.

But what if you want to do those things? Then you need to rasterize the undirect layers. This means turning them into direct raster layers with simple pixel information. But be careful, because rasterizing can also make you lose some information. Smart Objects will lose their link to the original image, and Text layers will lose their text data. So only rasterize when you really need to, and when you do, unleash your creativity and make your image amazing.

Photopea remove background

There are many ways to remove backgrounds in Photopea. But here I will tell you three ways to remove background from the image in photopea.

1. With the Magic Wand Tool

Go To Magic Wand Tool and you will find three more options there. You have to choose the Magic Wand option here. Then, you can choose a part of an image. This chosen area is shown by a line around it. We’ll use the Magic Wand tool to select the background. This tool can pick an area with similar colors (light green here). Hold Shift to combine the new selection with an old selection” means that if you hold down the Shift key while you click, the new selection will be added to the previous selection.

To delete a selected area, press Edit – Clear in the top menu, or Delete on your keyboard. The white and grey squares mean that the image is converted to png format and you can easily change the background.

2. With Background Eraser Option

You will get three tools under Background Eraser Tool.

  • Magic Eraser Tool – Select the Magic Eraser Tool. It is located in the Eraser tool group in the toolbar. Click on the background area you want to erase. The Magic Eraser will erase any pixels that match the color you clicked on. If you need to erase more background, click on the area again. Once you are done erasing the background, you can save the image.

  • Eraser Tool – Select the Eraser Tool. It is located in the Eraser tool group in the toolbar.
    • Size: This controls the size of the eraser brush.
    • Hardness: This controls how soft or hard the edges of the eraser brush are.

Photopea vs Photoshop

Photopea is a web based photo editor that you can use for free like photoshop. It supports all Photoshop tools such as  layers, masks, brushes, and filters. Photopea is also user-friendly, and anyone can learn how to use it. You can remove background, edit image with effect and by using other tools.

Photoshop is a desktop software that you have to pay for. It is the most popular image editor for professionals. It has more features than Photopea, including expert tools for changing photos, combining images, and making animations. Photoshop is also stronger than Photopea, but it can be harder to master.

How do you choose between Photopea and Photoshop?

If you want a free, simple photo editor, then Photopea is a good option. If you want the best image editing software, then Photoshop is the one to use.

Here are some other things to think about when choosing between Photopea and Photoshop:

Your money: If you don’t have much money, then Photopea is the obvious choice. Photoshop is a paid software, and the subscription cost can be high. Your experience: If you are new to image editing, then Photopea is a good option. It is easy to use and learn, even if you have never used image editing software before. Photoshop is more capable, but it can also be harder to learn. Your goals: If you want a lot of features, then Photoshop is the better option. It has tools for changing photos, combining images, and making animations that Photopea does not. But if you only want basic image editing features, then Photopea may be enough.

Ultimately you can choose according to your requirement. If you have heavy work then you have to purchase Photoshop otherwise you can work with Photopea.

We will discuss other tools and editing tricks in another blog post.
